HandymanWire - Appliance tips

Dishwasher

Cleaning Stubborn Stains

If your machine doesn't get the dishes clean all the way, run the hot water at the sink until it gets warm before starting the dishwasher. This will help the first wash water cycle to have hotter water.
120-140 degree water entering your machine not only helps it clean your dishes better, but will also add heat to help dry the dishes in the dry cycle.

Dishwasher/Refrigerator---Keep Apart

Don't install your dishwasher next to the refrigerator, since both emit HEAT!!! Insert a panel of insulation between, if they have to be next to one another. Keeping them apart will definitely extend the appliances' lifetime.

Dishwasher Use

No matter how many dishes you place in the dishwashing machine, the same amount of water and energy are used. Therefore to be more economical, run full loads at all times in the dishwasher! By air drying you will also save, by avoiding the drying heater from running.

Nozzle Maintenance

Your dishes not getting as clean as they once were? Your water inlet valve might need replacing! This part should be replaced about every 5 to 6 years to keep the right amount of water entering the machine.

IN a pinch

Don't use dish soap in your dishwasher! ( Normal dishwasher soap is low sudzing soap.) By using dish soap, the machine will fill up with soap bubbles and leak out the vent on the door.

MAINTENANCE

The seals last much longer if they remain wet and get regular use. Try to use your dishwasher at least once every 2 weeks! Even if you have to run it empty occassionally!
Clean the inside of the dishwasher by running it through one cycle (empty) with Tang (the drink mix) instead of soap. It will clean it of built up deposits.

Telephone

Cordless Phones

Remember when purchasing telephones for the home to buy at least one phone that plugs directly into a jack and requires no electricity. Many people buy only cordless phones, which are great for mobility around the house, but don't work at all when the power goes out!!! The cordless phone base stations need electricity to work. So be prepared for the next storm!

Old Phonecord

Save the coiled handset cord from your old phone. It works great for wrapping around the wires behind your computer or stereo system-keeping them organized and looking tidier.

Fans

Ceiling Fans

In the winter, save some money on your fuel bill by using your ceiling fan during the winter heating season. Run t...

HandymanWire - Refrigerator Preventive Maintenance

Does "If it ain't broke don't fix it" about cover your attitude on appliances? While there is not a lot of real practical preventive maintenance posssible on many appliances, you can prevent some major problems and inconveniences and greatly enhance the life of others through regular minor service. In this article I will cover servicing of working refrigerators and freezers.

The most important thing you can do to prevent future problems with working refrigerators and freezers is to ensure good air flow over the coils which radiate heat removed from the interior compartments. If yours has a set of condenser coils on the rear, dusting them off annually should be sufficient, and even that is not critical. Don't store paper or plastic bags on top of your refrigerator which might fall down and block air to those coils, however. Models of this type do need at least 2-3 inches of uncluttered air space above them for proper air flow. Models with coils underneath near the compressor need to have those coils cleaned at least twice a year, more often if you have an older Amana, or have pets that shed.

First, remove the kickplate/grill at the bottom front covering the opening under the lower door. Clean the kickplate with a garden hose to remove any dust and hair. Next, using either an inexpensive condenser coil brush or a vacuum cleaner with a crevice tool on the hose (which doesn't do as good a job), or an air compressor, which is VERY messy, clean over, under and through the coils found usually on the right front half behind the kickplate. Older Amana refrigerators are especially sensitive to air flow blockage. Overheated compressors soon die. Others with coils at this location include many GE/Hotpoint/J C Penney and older Whirlpool/Coldspot/Kenmore models.

While under there, on frost-free models removing and cleaning the plastic defrost drain pan often found there can prevent nasty odors later. Use warm, not boiling water and/or a garden hose. Be sure when reinstalling the pan not to jam it against the blades of the condenser cooling fan, on those models with a fan underneath in the rear (most of those without rear wall-mounted cooling coils.)

Other models, such as Admiral, Montgomery Wards, Signature, and some Maytag,Magic Chef, Norge, and Tappan models have a kind of "jelly roll" of black sheet metal with internal freon passages in the right rear underneath. The condenser brush is the only good way to clean these, other than a garden hose or an air compressor used outdoors.

Be sure,if the refrigerator has a rear cardboard cover, to replace it after service. If it is damaged, cut a new one from a cardboard box (prepared pizza delivery boxes work great!) The open fan cover grill areas are not critical but the solid ones are vital. These covers force air to be pulled over the hot condenser, cooling it, rather than being sucked in from open areas at the rear of the refrigerator. Without this cove...

HandymanWire - Refrigerator Questions and Answers

Installing New GE Refrigerator w/Icemaker...

In order to roll the refrigerator out, do I use a pigtail with the excess copper tubing going into the refrigerator water supply What about flexible plastic tubing instead of copper?

I used the pigtail effect, only used just one large single coil of copper. Works great.

Leaking Refrigerator

Have a good amount of water leaking down from the inside back wall of the freezer compartment of refrigerator, ice in ice maker clumping together quite often.

Remove any drawer bins that are at the bottom of the fridge and freezer and check that there is no clogging of the drain hole..IF this fridge has one. I am just thinking of my OLD fridge and what I need to do sometimes.
Check the seal on the door...is there a gap that air is getting in...DID you just move it recently. Your best bet however to find out what really is wrong is to call a maintenance person to have a good look at it.

sounds like the drain in the bottom of the freezer or the tube is clogged. When most self defrosting freezers defrost, the ice melts, runs through a hole or tube in the bottom of the freezer and into a tray under the freezer which is then evaporated from the heat generated by the compressor. if the water cant get to the tray it will eventually run out of the freezer since the defrost timer continues to cycle.

-- If I understand your 2 problems properly

1) If the water is running down into the refrigerator section, This usually means the drain is blocked. Look in lower section at the top center ( you may have to remove control panel to get access) remove the drain cup gentle with screw driver from each side, clean , from under unit at the...

Installing Fridge: Piping Question

Simple question, hopefully a simple answer.
I have a new refrigerator with an ice/water dispenser and wish to hook up a water supply to it. No piping exists. What to do?

With luck there is a sink nearby?????

If the refrigerator didn't come with one, you can buy a simple clamp that you clamp onto your cold water line and it pierces the pipe and gives you a fitting to run your plastic line to the fridge.

The plastic line can urn through your cupboards and exit behind the fridge. That is if you are lucky enough to have the fridge next to the cupboards. You can also tap a line in the basement below and run the tube up through a hole in the floor behind the fridge.
